Artisan sketchup 20204/20/2024 ![]() ![]() Small articles and small GIFs to illustrate various concepts and challenges. Quads in SketchUp is a rather alien concept - because of this I plan to create a series of little guides and tutorials. It may not be for everyone - but if it is, then I hope it can be of value. SUbD is a piece in this puzzle - a subdivision extension that consume and produce quads. Once you have a mesh built with quads it's much more predictable and you can create a large suite of tools that efficiently manipulate it. So from there I started many years ago to explore, tinker, with QuadFace Tools, a set of SketchUp tools that allowed me to manipulate and create quad-based topology in SketchUp (with non-planar quads). But it's been a challenge in SketchUp because it nativly doesn't allow for non-planar quads which creates big challenges in the workflow. The first thing you'll notice is the toolbar. It is a complete re-work with a glut of new features added to turn SketchUp into a true organic modeling application. (If you want more into about why I obsess about quads you can start with some of the links I posted in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=397&t=63820&start=30#p584988 For further reading I'd recommend anything that dwell into the topic of 3d topology.) Quad-based workflow is common in the industry - almost a standard. Artisan is the result of over two years hard work and is more than just a refined update of it's predecessor Subdivide and Smooth(SDS). The background for SUbD is that I've been somewhat obsessed with being able to model with quads. Artisan also have a really nice sculpting set - which can be applied regardless of which subdivision method you use. It uses an algorithm that works better with triangles than what SUbD so. If you are not that big on quad based workflows then Artisan might be a better choice for you - in terms of subdividing. Select the plugin RBZ file that you just downloaded. Open the Extension Manager (Window -> Extension Manager) Click the big 'Install Extension' button at the bottom left of the screen. It would depend entirely on your workflow - and I'd argue that the two in extensions in question isn't mutually exclusive. Make sure you already have a license for Artisan purchased from the Artisan website or from an authorized reseller. If, after I convert the "block" drawing to a mesh, is one of them easier/better for "fine tuning"? ![]() I have not used any of these types of tools and I am a little embarrassed to say that I cannot fully appreciate the differences you are pointing out. ![]() ![]() Problem, so I'm in extension warehouse>Atisan Oganic Toolset>click on download (directs me to same page with install button)>click on install (opens page with terms and conditions of use and sings me out)>checked accept terms and conditions of use>click confirm> and nothing happens.Ntxdave wrote:Help me understand the point you guys are making. after a license must be purchased." I also read it's free upgrade if I have the original one (I do) but with the original one there was no license, so how do I go about the free upgrade? wi Ok, just went to extension warehouse and downloaded the new version. Q: how do I upgrade to the new version with new tools added? I use it with my SU8 but since upgrading to SU2015 and installing the original SDS on SU2015 all icons are "green smiley faces" and I have no problem with that because if I point my cursor on one of the icons it tells me what tool it is but I want to upgrade to a new version with new tools.
